Cock Vane up or Down?
4 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 1
I shoot a Hoyt AM 35 @ 70 lbs 30 inch draw with FMJ 340s fletched with 3 blazer vanes, slight helical, fixed blade broadheads, and the QAD ultra rest, should I be shooting my cock vane up or down ?

I know this sounds pretty basic, but someone recently told me I have been shooting wrong for a year now (I dont seem to have any trouble with vane contact as far as I can tell)

Thanks

RS

With the QAD most people I know shoot cock vane up. It gives you max clearence over the launcher arm.

with a drop away why would it matter? i shoot a QAD and i have it turned with cock feather out because this keeps my vanes away from my cables... never had an issue

On some models of dropaway rests the launcher arm can bounce off the shelf and cause contact with the fletching. I think the QAD has some sort brake to stop this so you're correct it most likely dosn't matter.

Exactly. That is my exact setup also.
There is no set rule for this. Whatever works for your setup. Up, down, sideways, 45 degree angle, doesn't matter. As long as your vanes are not contacting anything on the way through put the vanes wherever you want.

I have to agree with AZ and 365. After listening to the episode about the Hooter Shooter I changed my "belief system" abut where the cock vane should be. I started to move my nock around to group arrows better. What I found was I had more arrows that shot alike. Before I might have three sets out of a dozen that would group different. After experimenting with turning my nock, I was able to get only two group that shot different. So what this really mean in the big picture?...By stepping out of the box and adopting a new way of thinking, Mot taking for granted everything other "master archers" tell us, we can actually tune in our equipment better and not have to spend a fortune on two or three dz. arrows to get ready for a hunt. As long as the fletching has no contact, it shouldn't matter if your cock vane doesn't match with others in your own quiver.
