Back pack sleepping bag
1 Month, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 1
OK,lets start by saying. Great Job at BATB 2010 to all! I had a absolute wonderful time and met some awesome folks again this year. Now on to the matter at hand. I and my lovely are going to pack in to deer hunt this year and I am trying to figure out what would be a good, light weight yet not super expensive sleeping bag for her and I. Any ideas?

For the most part with these bags you get what you pay for with quality but sometimes more price doesn't mean less weight.

Down is the lightest with many good bags from North Face, Marmot, Western Mountaineering, etc. but many can be very pricey. Although I have not tested a bunch, I am a certified gear junky and love researching gear and the like. Send me a PM with a price range you're looking to stay around and I'll see if I can help

PS... I just read your post "signature" and your bow setup freaked me out...I'm shooting the same bow, rest, sight (TEK Target), and have been shooting gold tip arrows (as well as eastons)

Take a look at the Marmot Trestles bag. They are synthetic loft which I think is better than down unless it is very cold where rain isnt likely b/c the r-value and ability to loft are better with synthetics if they get wet. Down loses much of its qualities if moisture pervades the bag. The trestles is also listed at a very good price. I got the Marmot Trestles 15 and I would not use it unless it is around 35 or under at night because it is rated for 15 and I used it this January on a three day backpack trip this winter. We got 30 inches of snow in three days and the evening temps where around 20 degrees with 50 mph winds. I am a very thermal person so that explains part of this but i slept with the bag unzipped every night. The other trestles arent rated as well and are lighter.

If the expected temps are around 30 degrees or warmer I think one of the lighter bags would be sufficient.

I researched this exact same thing a few years ago. Once you narrow down your price range the question comes down to down or synthetic. I went with a 15 deg down Marmont (not sure of the model) that I found at Sierra Trading post. I would check out their web site if you don't have a store in your area. You can get some good deals on good gear. DeR is spot on though. Below 30 degrees in my 15 deg bag starts to get cold.

Troy...
First I would think is that you need to suit the materials for the weather... When dry nothing insulates like down.. but when wet you are much better off with synthetics..

Are you going to tent it, tarp it or bivy it? That should weigh in your decision.. If you tent it your are better isolated from the elements...

Also, make sure you get a LONG and Em gets a SHORT... No need to carry extra weight for Em and you are too tall for a regular bag..

As far as temp ratings go... I would go about 10-30 degrees lower than what conditions you might encounter... Neither of you have much natural insulation...

I have an older North Face bag that I bought a long time ago and it has severed me well everywhere from the Ice Shelf of the Bering Straight and the deserts of Mexico... I picked it up in the Bargain Cave in Cabelas...
