Pimpin My Ride(s) - Part 3

...Back to the Quest 33.

I took some accurate measurements of my "peep to sight apeture" and "peep to arrow shaft" which is needed to estimate speed in Archery's Advantage (as well as setup sight tapes).  I also updated my Archer's Advantage software so all the specs of the 2008 bows came in (i.e. Hoyt Katera).  This is done by simply clicking the "update" button in Archer's Advantage which goes out to the internet and gets an executable file you can download to update the program's database.

In addition, I went out and shot again to get some accurate marks.  I shot at 20 yards and 50 yards, and entered those new marks into the AA software.  When all was calculated (Bow setup, sight setup, arrow shaft selection and weight), Archer's Advantage is telling me I am shooting 266 feet per second (fps) out of the Quest 33 with 80lb limbs.  Sound a little low?  Yeah, I thought so too.

But, no worries on this point.  Right now my goal is to get comfortable shooting the bow and ensuring my form is golden with a new setup.  Pin point accuracy is not my priority at this point....getting to know my new equipment (as well as how my arms are holding up with 80lb limbs) is what I have chosen as my priority.  Over the next couple of weeks I will really start getting dialed in for some upcoming 3D shoots.

I'd love to hear what you all are doing with your bows this time of year.  Any new accessories?  New practice techniques?  Add a comment to this blog entry and let me know what you are working on.

Shoot Straight!

Aneal,
Always enjoy your blog so I decided to post a comment. This year I have swapped out half of my sight set up. After using a Lethal Weapon Max with single pin then a three pin aperature, I wanted to try something new. Now I have a Lethal Weapon Max with a Spot Hogg Small aperature 5 pin attached. I am also going to shorten my arrows. I originally cut my arrows long to get the total arrow weight up to 410 grains. After purchasing AA software I learned that my arrow was very underspined. According to the software, by cutting 1.5 inches from the arrow it will be properly spined. With some creative weighting to the tip and nock the arrow remains properly spined for my bow set up while staying above 405 grains and 292 FPS. Now it is time to stop tinkering until December!

One question, do you know anyone with actual chrono data on a LimbSaver DeadZone or can you produce it? The Katera XL and Deadzone have my interest (next year). Based on my experience with Hoyt, I am confident in their IBO speed rating but have nothing to go on with Limbsaver's claimed IBO speed.

Thanks again for BOWCAST, keep it going!

Limbsaver Chrono Speed
written by aroney, May 03, 2008
JGO,
First, thanks for the kind words. I know the IBO for the Limbsaver is 320...however, I don't know personally of anyone who is actually shot it through a chrono. But, since you ask the question, I will bring up a good point. These are the types of questions all of us bowhunters have. We can't shoot every single bow.....or can we? I would suggest heading to the nearest Limbsaver retailer, and ask on the archery pros if they would be willing to set the bow to close to your draw length and let you shoot it through a chrono. During this slow time of year for archery shops, I would be willing to bet they would let you shoot it. If you do get the chance to shoot it, let us know what speed you were measuring!

Has anyone else actually put the Deadzone through a chrono?

Katera XL
written by dbowhunter, May 14, 2008
Yesterday I picked up the new bow for 2008 and beyond. It is a Hoyt Katera XL, 32" draw (yeah I'm tall), Ripcord Drop Away, .25" peep, Fuse Stabilizer, arrow web quiver, stock strings and cables, and a dozen new Carbon Express Aramid KV 350s with blazer vanes. I am most excited to try out the arrows which feature kevlar layering between carbon for strength and weight forward technology which should help with broadhead stability in my long draw length. Had the shop (Wilderness Archery in Rocklin, CA) tune and help with my setuo to ensure I am pretty close. I little fine tuning with some paper should get me pretty on the money.

I have a G5 Optix XR on the way and am excited about it. I have held back on buying a sure-loc sight since I do some of my hunting up close in pretty tight cover and didn't want to sacrifice any 'speed of the shot.' This new sight should fit me perfect!

I really want to hit the range but I am waiting for the sight. Besides, I've got to fly across the country to go catch some MahiMahi in Key West this weekend. (Sorry to brag but God that is fun to say).

Good shooting everyone.

You are going to absolutely LOVE that bow! Congrats! The Optix XR is a great all around sight - cool thing is it will match your Realtree AP on the Katera.

Nothing like an enthusiastic endorsement to boost your expectations and calm the nerves surrounding the (very expensive) decision you just made...

The XL will be a riot...

August first and the Nevada Mule Deer season is now only 2 1/2 months away. I have a lot of shooting to fit into a very busy summer schedule to get ready. This will be my first mule deer hunt. I am a transplant from michigan to california by way of nebraska. I was raised on whitetails, did the blacktail thing for a year last year, and am ready to hit the Ruby Mountains with a backpack for 5 days and make something happen...

Besides I had to get rid of that Reflex after the traumatic experience. I don't want to think of that man pain with a pope and young in front of me...
