The Need for Speed

The weekend kicked off with a batchelor party for my good friend. We met at Coors Field for a Rockies game, and that ended with about 30 police officers escorting the entire batchelor party out of the stadium....more on that in another blog entry.

I did get some shooting/testing in this weekend. I was thrown for a couple of loops on the range today. Here goes....

  • Quest 33
    • Arrows had good elevation at 20 yards, but I noticed I was clicking about an inch to the right. Not sure what was going on there. The last time I shot was through paper, so I am assuming I just had my sight off a bit when we were playing around. Anyway, couple of clicks of the Sure-Loc, and everything was back in order.
    • I headed out with the last sight tape I printed off of Archer's Advantage. Things were fine until I started focusing on 50 yards. Wind picked up a bit, and I couldn't get a round off arrows to fly consistent. I was clicking in a 3 inch circle, but just not the same place....kept going round after round until I started to notice I was getting WAY off the left (like 8 inches off). I was stumped for a couple of rounds until I looked down at my sight and the 3rd Axis bolt was loose...the entire housing was moveable back and forth. I eye-balled it back and tightened it down....all was good again.

  • Katera
    • This was really the first time I shot any distance with the Katera this year. 20 yards was spot on. To my disbelief, 30 and 40 yards were clicking as well. I have some minor windage issues, but I thought my main focus with this bow today was going to be to adjust elevation....no need - didn't touch a pin on the G5 Optima XR sight.

Once the wind got unbearable (and my arms were starting to lose it with those 80 lb limbs), I headed down to the Sportsman's Warehouse in Aurora, CO to run both these bows through a chronograph. I was very interested in seeing what going with 80lb limbs was going to buy me. Keep in mind, I have not done any real "speed tuning". Basically this is out of the box, cranked down a bit (Quest is at 76 lbs and Katera is at 73 lbs currently). The results of the Chronograph:

Quest 33 - 271 fps

Katera - 286 fps

Now Chronographs can be finicky, so I don't take either of these measurements as the gospel....but I am very happy with those results. I'll do a little more tinkering to figure out if those speeds are actually accurate.

Came back home and entered those speeds into Archery's Advantage software to see what kind of Kinetic Energy I was getting. The results:

G5 Quest 33 - 61 ft-lb @ 80 yards

Hoyt Katera - 55.6 ft-lb @ 80 yards

Hmmm.....Katera is faster but has less Kinetic Energy. Interesting, don't you think?

More soon.

Great post! Good info there...
What are the specs on the arrows? Are you shooting the same arrows in both bows?

I would guess, based on your speed vs. kinetic energy results (calculations) that you are using a heavier arrow in the Quest... Are you going to surprise me by saying that they are the same arrows? smilies/tongue.gif

Thanks again for the info and I am curiious to hear about your next shooting session!

Arrows are the same
written by aroney, May 08, 2008
I am shooting the same arrows out of both bows - Easton 340 FMJ's.

Stumped? Let's hear some other hypotheses.

Energy
written by dbowhunter, May 14, 2008
That is interesting. I've taken a few physics classes (I have an engineering degree) in my day and that doesn't really make sense. Kinetic Energy =1/2(mass) (velocity) ^2 . Unless the mass chanfes, which it didn't, that is impossible. Unless somehow your calculator is figuring that the arrow out of the katera is slowing down faster than that of the quest. (if that makes sense) But this 2 is impossible as the arrows are identical and once airbourne, the bow has nothing to do with it, assuming the bow is shooting the arrows straight, and the software doesn't know that anyways...

best I can say is double and triple check your inputs, because something is wrong or the forumla the software uses is based on some theorectical numbers not actual physics.

DBO Nails It!

DBO,
I am glad someone with a physics degree set me straight! I was waiting for someone to tell me it was impossible, because it is. The real reason I was showing incorrect data was that I had fat fingered some of my measurements into Archer's Advantage, and therefore the software was telling me the exact truth (based on my incorrect variables). The real point I wanted to make by posing the question I think you already have made - this is a physics equation, and Archer's Advantage can give you completely accurate speeds and sight tapes based on MATH! It truly is one of the coolest archery tools I have ever come across.

So, thanks for making my point, and I hope you guys will give Archer's Advantage a try so you can see just how easy it is to tweak your setup to get the maximum balance between velocity and kinetic energy. We are shooting at animals - it's important.

Anneal,

The software sounds pretty neat and am glad it was right and you were wrong via fat fingering. At least there is some math behind it as you said. I think the greatest advantage of the software would be the sight tape feature. As long as you input your sight and bow information correctly, it will be dead nuts to the yard as long as you set the first point correctly in the field.

How does the sight tape feature work (I haven't listened to that episode yet) does it know THE sight manufacturers specs or are they inserted manually?

Sight Tapes - how does it work
written by aroney, May 23, 2008
DBOHunter,
Archer's Advantage does take into consideration some specific manufacturer sight features. It works amazingly for Sure-Loc.

However, for some other sights it does take a little manual effort to get the sight tapes accurately. For example, if you have an HHA Single Pin Sight, Archer's Advantage doesn't give you an option to choose that sight. But you can still enter a "generic sight", and then use calipers to measure your marks. As long as you do that and enter accurate information on the rest of your bow setup, you should have accurate sight tapes. It's that simple!
