People often talk about hunting and fishing as a traditional pastime that has been handed down from father to son for generations after generations. In my extended family hunting isn’t something that we grew up doing; I think our parents were busy trying to carve out a better life for us.In the case of my cousin Carla, hunting is something that she recently started doing by the encouragement of her boyfriend, Noah. When we were growing up I don’t think Carla really had any interest in hunting and fishing but a few years ago she entered the Forest Wildlife program at Western New Mexico University. After graduating she started working for the Forest Service here in Silver City and she is doing really well.
Anyway you look at it I really think that she has found her calling.
This was Carla’s first hunt EVER and she started shooting a bow a few months ago.She is shooting a Diamond and I think Stryker broadheads. Other than that I don’t know her setup.I do know that she is pulling around 45lbs and that she was very conscious that her effective range maybe 30 yards.
A couple of days ago Carla and I talked about how the entire hunt when down, even though she is a new bow hunter she sure has the gift of telling a good story.I wish I could convey the excitement in her voice but there just isn’t any way to do it in writing.Basically, they were hunting in the Gila, It was their first morning, they hiked two miles, Noah let out a bugle, a bull responded, Noah worked they bull in for a shot, Carla made a solid double lung shot20 yard shot, they waited an hour and they found the bull piled up 40 yards from where she hit him.Sounds pretty easy, doesn’t it?
So where does she go from here?Well, she said that she is now shooting once or twice a week at our local range and that she can’t wait to chase big Mule Deer this January.Hopefully, we can get her to some of the 3-D shoots next summer.I am sure she will have a great time.Either way I am damn proud of her.It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter when you start the outdoor lifestyle it is just important that we all get on the trail.

PS... On a site note I just want to say thanks to Noah for helping her get started.

I hope everyone is having a great season on bowcast . I was able to connect on a a great Mule Deer. I was in the bowl where the deer come back from water. I have watched this bowl for 2 years, so I know what the deer do on a daily basis. My dad and I were dad glassing the bowl and we saw the bucks. We quickly positioned ourselves for a ambush. When I saw the bucks coming over the hill, I ranged him at 55 yards. I drew back and shot.
I hit him in the front shoulder and I went to find my arrow I thought I had missed. Later I found out that I made a good hit and the buck was pouring blood. My dad and I tracked him for an hour. When we finally found him he was bedded. I was able to sneak up to him and get another arrow in him to finish him off.
This hunt was very special because I got to share it with my dad.
All the time spent scouting and practicing with my bow paid off for me.
