Wow, fitness is seriously the backbone to true bowhunting prowess. Listen to Launch and Cox on this week's podcast as they relive their hunt in Nevada...everything was up or down with all their gear on their backs. I can relate as I just went to northen Nevada where you never step below 10,000 ft and you're constantly being tested. I was hauling my gear plus an XL2 and tripod (67 lbs alll together). My buddy had a archery mule deer tag and I filmed him on a DIY hunt. We both were in tremendou shape and it enabled us to glass numerous canyons, drop in on numerous stalks, and hunt our hardest on day one through day 10. I could not imagine stepping foot into those mountains without some prior conditioning. We lived off Wilderness Athlete supplements and bars, and Mtn House freeze dried food.  I didn't realize how hard it was going to be to stay hydrated and how finding water was pretty much impossible...BUT,  I had so much fun just trailing my buddy KC with a camera.  We filmed a cougar from about 10 yards, a 350 bull bugling on the 26th of August with his 150+ cows, and we also got a 170 inch buck from 60 yards where my buddy pulls back his Bowtech...you'll have to watch our footage on a upcoming Sportsman's Warehouse News DVD.

From there we drove all the way to Eastern MT where we swtiched roles, and I had a speed goat tag as we took to the hills .  We were trying some spot and stalk as well as some water hole sitting on a private Ranch with MT Professional Hunters LTD.  I met up with my buddies from MT Decoy (Drew, Ashley, and Jerry) before we hit the field, these guys know all about pronghorn hunting.   They gave us some last minute advice before we headed out.  I don't think there was a day we didnt hike 10 miles as stalks were EXTREMELY long and daunting.  We got the job done on camera the last day and it was one of those hunts where you really had to be persistent...zero to hero in 2 seconds is the best way to sum up bowhunting out West.  Also, I bumped into Craig Heuter of Trophies West and I got to say, whoever wins that hunt is in for a real treat as they have some of the best hunting spots in one of the aboslute best hunting states!

All,

Just got back from 3 days chasing the wapiti around. No kill yet, but overall a great few days up in the high country.

I had the chance to retrieve all of our game cameras, and Matt picked a winner of a water hole the last time he set cameras in the beginning of August. This gives me an opportunity to review the performance of the Stealth Cams that we tested for the first time this year. We had two of the cheaper Wildview models, and one of the higher end (infrared) Prowler models. All models passed with flying colors as far as their usefulness to us in the field. The Prowler was most impressive with some of the night shots we got using the infrared.

In just a few days, my good friend Mark Hogue will be making the 2000+ mile journey from Western Pennsylvania to join me in Elk camp here in Colorado. Mark, I know you may be missing a few Steelers games while you are hunting elk, but hopefully the pics below get you geared up for heading West (young man)!

NOTE: Camera date and time were not set correctly. The dates read September, but in reality it is August and the time is about 2 hours ahead of what it should be.

So what do we do as pronghorn hunters when 2 to 4 inches of rain falls on our little honey hole, and every cattle track turns into a goat's personal water bottle? Some say, pack it up and wait until things dry back out.

Others say switch to spot-and-stalk tactics. Which one do I think is the best? Both - depending...

Hey Folks,

It seems pretty quiet here at the BowCast office.  Why?  Everyone is out hunting!  I am getting ready to head up to my elk camp today - hopefully for a little early season action.

Anthony is heading to the field next week as well, and Sean Degrey from Trophies West is busy guiding clients on some monster speed goats.  So, with that being said, we have made the decision to extend the contest for the free Pronghorn hunt by a few weeks.

What does that mean?  We will announce the winner on 9/21/2008 instead of 9/1/2008 as originally published.  It also means that if you HAVE NOT registered for this free hunt give-away, you still have a couple of weeks to do so.  Get registered......if you win a free hunt you are going to be pretty stoked that you took the 3 minutes it takes to register!  You can get all the details at the following URL:

http://www.freehuntcontest.com/

Good luck in the field, and we will have plenty of reports from the BowCast team forthcoming!
