BowCast - Episode #58 - Elk Senses - Using sight, sound, and speech for effective elk hunting PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 9
Sunday, 17 August 2008

Podcast Description

For those of us planning an Elk hunt this year, the season is just around the corner for the majority of Western archery tags. For those of us who are heading out this year, or maybe have plans to hunt elk in the future, we all have heard the demands it takes to be successful against the great Wapiti. It's usually a physically demanding hunt, logistics play a big part being in remote areas of the high alpine and back country, and overall presents one of the greatest archery hunting challenges - and that is exactly why we all love it.

So what are the best tactics for Elk? We've all seen the TV shows, and read the magazine articles that give a ton of advice on successful tactics for hunting elk. Many of the resources out there spend a ton of time relating how to "talk" with Elk, or how to eliminate your scent to fool the Wapiti's nose. On this episode of BowCast we present a different perspective with a foundation solely on Elk biology and behavior.

BowCast is joined once again by long time friend and certified wildlife biologist Chris Roe. As Aneal indicates in the intro of this show, Chris spent 3 years of his life living with one specific Elk herd in Colorado studying and researching the biology and behavior of what make Elk tick. Chris is a pro-staffer for Primos hunting calls and PSE and brings 13 years of experience in Elk biology to the table to share with us all how to use the perception of Elk (sight, sound, and smell) to create effective setups on big bulls and increase our success in the field. Eliminating scent is the most important when hunting elk, right? Listen in and hear from an expert on what to focus on when hunting elk.

BowCast - Episode #57 - Worst Case Scenario - Medical Evacuation in the Field PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 0
Sunday, 10 August 2008

Podcast Description

As hunters, outdoor enthusiasts, and global travelers we are all very aware of the dangers that lurk in and around the lifestyle we have chosen. As hardcore bowhunters, we are all well versed in what it means to be "safe" in the field. We have first aid kits, personal beacons, and we know CPR (hopefully).

But regardless of our training and our awareness of safety in the field, it is very important for all of us to ponder the "worst case scenario". We don't like to think of it, but we owe it to ourselves and our loved ones to have a "plan" on what to do if a hunting trip (or a family vacation for that matter) goes wildly wrong.

On this episode of BowCast Anthony and Aneal have the privilege of being joined with two U.S. Navy Seals who lend their services to a company called Global Rescue. Carter Gaffney and Glen Dougherty work for Global Rescue and share with the BowCast listeners how you can ensure, without a shadow of a doubt, that if you get into a situation you need help to handle, you are covered. Specifically on this episode, BowCast covers:

1) How would you pay for helicopter or life flight rescue if you need it?

2) If you found yourself in a foreign country and in need of a reputable english speaking doctor, how you find that doctor?

3) If you were in a bad car accident many miles from home, how could your family ensure that you got the care you needed as well as transportation back to you home doctors?

4) If you had an accident in the backcountry, what is the quickest way to get help?

5) If you were sick in a foreign country, who could you call to get an appropriate remedy over the phone?

Global Rescue provides a service that is quite frankly a no brainer for those of us bow hunt and statistically put ourselves in situations that increase the chances of the potential of an accident. It's complete peace of mind to know that you are part of a service that will bend over backwards to ensure your safe return - whether from the backcountry or on a family vacation to Mexico.

BowCast - Episode #55 - How Far is he? - A Discussion on Rangefinders PDF Print E-mail
User Rating: / 0
Sunday, 13 July 2008

Podcast Description

Range finders are nothing new to the bowhunter. We've used them for years, but the technology is really starting to push the envelope. A number of manufacturers are improving the optics, look and feel, durability, and price of the typical range finder. Add in features such as angle compensation, and it is easy to start getting "lost" in the price versus functionality decision. We at BowCast want to help you through some of the technical considerations of choosing a range finder.

Aneal and Anthony are joined on this episode by CJ Davis, PR Director for Nikon Sport Optics. While CJ does a ton to promote and market Nikon products to all of us hunters, it is surprising to learn that CJ is also involved with product development, field testing, and final production for Nikon optics. For those of you looking to learn how the guts of a range finder works as well as the questions you should be asking your local pro shop related to Range Finders, this episode covers the gamut. Included in the discussion:

1) How does a range finder work?

2) What are the effective ways to carry a range finder?

3) What is the price and functionality spectrum for a typical range finder?

4) What questions should you have answered before going to a store to purchase a new range finder?

User Rating: / 1
Sunday, 06 July 2008

Podcast Description

Have you ever gotten winded while hunting?  Ever doze off in a treestand when you weren't even tired?  Have you ever not gone in "deeper" because you were trying to conserve your energy?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, you are not alone.  We have all been there.  But in typical BowCast style, this week's episode gives an amazing perspective on not only how important what you eat in the field is, but how you can make it easy and convenient to get the right nutrition to keep your body and mind running with a full tank.

Anthony and Aneal are joined by Mark Paulson - Co-Founder of Wilderness Athlete as well as the Director of Athletic Performance at the University of New Mexico.  Mark is a hard core bowhunter, and has built a compnay around nutritional products for a targeted athletic niche that has been all but forgotten in the world of health and nutrition - hunters.

Some of what is covered on this episode:

1)  Why Water is NOT the best form of hydration

2)  Why you should eat more often when hunting

3)  The three components you need in every meal and/or snack to keep your body and mind functioning well.

4)   What types of food are good to eat when hunting
