My apologies for a delay in my blog entries...but as you know, I have been in Nebraska hunting public land for Rio Grande Turkey.

Got 3 days in the field under my belt, and despite some unusually rough weather (cold and high winds), and some not so unusual henned up gobblers this early in the season, the dust has shaken off and I am ready to get back out after the mandatory 3 days this week in the office :-).

The most unusual thing I witnessed during this last trip (in the spot I have been hunting for the last 4 years) was something I have not experienced before.  One evening and one morning  I knew where turkeys were roosted, but they didn't gobble a single time at sun down or sun up.  Complete silence for 5 miles of river bottom.  Did the turkey's disappear?  Absolutley not...they just completely shut up on the roost.  Could have been the cold front that moved in that made for a cold (about 32 degrees at daybreak) and extremely windy next morning.  Not entirely sure.

Despite weather and henned up gobblers, we did get a couple of quick opportunities that didn't pan out.  Had about 15 birds and 4 strutters at 30 yards at one setup, but just couldn't put it all together.  This is early season in Turkey country...and despite not filling a tag yet, it was way better than being at the office :-).

I leave for Kansas on Thursday, and will be out in the field for about a week.  I hope to try and post some pictures/blog entries from the road during this next trip.  More before I take off.

Keep up the energy on the forums and look for some great guests and topics coming up on the podcast (If we can beat having T-Bone on last week!).  If you have any questions, feel free to comment on this entry, and use the BowCast forums.  We always love to hear from all of you in BowCast land!

For some reason I thought the birds you were hunting were Merriams. Are you guys on public or private? I might need to take a road trip next year... Can you blog about the tag information???

Husker State
written by aroney, April 01, 2008
Nebraska is a great state as you can hunt Merriams, Rios, and to a lesser extent Easterns. 3 of the 4 NA subspecies in 1 state! In addition, you can buy up to 3 tags! So a lot of hunting to be done across the husker state.

You can get all the info you need on tags from Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. We hunt ALL public land, and there is plenty of it across this state:

Nebraska Hunting opportunities
written by blindretrieve, April 03, 2008
I have to admit, Nebraska is a great state for hunting in general. Great waterfowling with Platte River and Rainwater Basin area. Whitetail and Mule deer. Pronghorn out west. Bighorn sheep and Elk also, however those are very limited tags, but they do exist. Regarding Turkey. A tag is statewide, no units, which is great. The majority of the state is considered "hybrids" of the 3 subspecies intermixing, but for the most part if you want a Merriam head for the Pine Ridge in the N.W. corner. Rio go where Aneal went Southwest, south Central. Eastern stick to the Missouri river area on the eastern boundry.

Jamaro, or anyone for that matter, I work alot with the Game and Parks and have many wildlife biologist colleagues throughout the state that I would be willing to put you in contact with. If there is an area your interested in drop me a line and I would be more than happy to assist where I can.
